Background of the Crisis in Haiti

Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in July 2021, Haiti has faced a tumultuous modern political history marked by dictatorships, coups, foreign interventions, natural disasters, and ongoing economic challenges. The 2010 earthquake already worsened existing hardships, leading to slow recovery efforts and a cholera outbreak added salt to injury. After the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, international help came, but it was too slow and not very effective. Even two years later, around half a million people were still stuck living in tents. To make matters worse, United Nations soldiers from Nepal accidentally brought cholera to Haiti, causing an outbreak that killed about 10,000 people.
