“Natsume Arata no Kekkon” (Natsume Arata’s Marriage): A live-action film adaptation of the psychological thriller manga “Natsume Arata no Kekkon” (Natsume Arata’s Marriage) is scheduled for release in Japan on September 6, 2024. The movie follows the story of Arata Natsume, an employee at a child guidance centre, who proposes to Shinju Shinagawa, a 22-year-old woman on death row known as the “Shinagawa Clown” serial killer. Directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi, the cast includes Yuya Yagira as Arata Natsume and Yuina Kuroshima as Shinju Shinagawa. The original manga, written by Taro Nogizaka, was serialized in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Superior from June 2019 to January 2024, spanning 12 tankobon volumes and garnering 2.4 million copies in Japan.

“Natsume Arata no Kekkon” is a Japanese manga series about Arata Natsume, who works at a child protection centre. He receives a request from Takuto Yamashita, whose father was a victim of a serial murder, to meet the killer, Shinju Shinagawa, on his behalf. Takuto had been corresponding with Shinju to find his father’s missing head. Arata decides to help Takuto and meets Shinju in prison. When Shinju realizes Arata isn’t the one writing the letters, she starts to leave. In a desperate move to keep her there, Arata impulsively proposes marriage to her. Surprisingly, Shinju accepts and agrees to cooperate with Arata and her lawyer, Miyamae, who believes in her innocence. As they work together, Shinju’s behaviour shifts and she even helps reveal the location of another victim’s arm. Despite suspicions that Shinju might be the real murderer, Miyamae urges Arata to continue with the marriage plan to help jog Shinju’s memory and potentially clear her name. Reluctantly, Arata agrees, unsure of Shinju’s true intentions.
