In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, actor-turned-politician Hema Malini secured a significant victory in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura constituency, defeating Congress candidate Mukesh Dhangar by a margin of 2,93,407 votes, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI) website as of 7:55 pm. The 75-year-old Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader is seeking her third consecutive term from Mathura, where her closest rivals included Mukesh Dhangar of the Congress Party and former IRS officer Suresh Singh of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Hema Malini, often referred to as Bollywood’s ‘dream girl,’ addressed her campaign in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, showcasing her dedication and political acumen.

Political Journey of Hema Malini

A trained Bharatnatyam dancer and Padma Shri recipient in 2000, Hema Malini began her political career in 1999, campaigning for fellow actor Vinod Khanna, a BJP candidate in Punjab. In 2003, she was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President APJ Abdul Kalam and officially joined the BJP in 2004. She became BJP general secretary in 2010 and returned to the Rajya Sabha in 2011, recommended by party general secretary HN Ananth Kumar. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Hema Malini won the Mathura constituency from RLD leader Jayant Chaudhary with a margin of 22.65%. She retained her seat in 2019 with a 60.88% vote share, while her opponent, Kunwar Narendra Singh of the RLD, received 34.26%. Her continued success in Mathura show her strong political presence and popularity among the voters.
