Lionsgate Television On The Way To Develop English-language TV adaptation film “Oldboy.”: Lionsgate Television is relaunching the English-language TV adaptation of his famous film “Oldboy.” Park, who directed and co-wrote the original film, will produce the series with his partner, Syd Lim. The project will be recreated by Lionsgate executives Courtney Mock and Tara Joshi, with Bryan Weiser handling the deal. Park expressed excitement about partnering with Lionsgate, known for bold and original storytelling, to bring “Oldboy” to TV. The original 2003 film, starring Choi Min-sik and others, tells the story of a man imprisoned in a hotel room for 15 years who is suddenly released and given five days to find out why.

“Oldboy,” directed and co-written by Park Chan-wook, is an iconic South Korean film released in 2003. Loosely based on a Japanese manga of the same name, the story follows a man who is kidnapped and imprisoned in a sealed hotel room for 15 years without explanation. Upon sudden release, he has five days to uncover the reason for his captivity or face dire consequences. The film, starring Choi Min-sik, Yoo Ji-tae, Kang Hye-jung, and Oh Dal-su, received widespread acclaim upon its release and is often hailed as one of the best films of the 21st century.

“Oldboy” won the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, where it received praise from Quentin Tarantino, the president of the jury. Renowned film critic Roger Ebert described “Oldboy” as a “powerful film not because of what it depicts, but because of the depths of the human heart which it strips bare.” The film’s action sequences, particularly the single-shot corridor fight sequence, were highly praised for their impressive execution. The success of “Oldboy” led to two adaptations: an unauthorized Hindi remake in 2006 and an official American adaptation in 2013. As part of Park Chan-wook’s The Vengeance Trilogy, “Oldboy” serves as the second instalment, following “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance” (2002) and preceding “Lady Vengeance” (2005). In recognition of its long-lasting impact, “Oldboy” was ranked 64th on Empire’s list of the top 500 movies of all time in 2008. Additionally, in 2020, The Guardian ranked it number 3 among the classics of modern South Korean Cinema.
